About
The Generation Project
The Generation Project is an information and advocacy service, working with and for older people in East Manchester. Our services are free, confidential, impartial and open to anyone aged 55 and over and/or their carers.
The project focuses on providing people with information about services that can help meet their housing needs along with issues concerning general health and well being.
The Advocacy Service
We have an advocacy worker who can visit people in their own homes. She can provide support with specific things like filling in forms or making complaints and accessing services. We can help people consider their options and assist them with getting information.
Our general focus is health, housing and well-being but we try to assist with whatever you need.
The Hot Pot events
We also carry out group advocacy. We hold hot pot lunches for people from East Manchester of 55 and over, and their carers. Each Hot Pot event has a theme and we will usually invite two or three speakers around this theme. We provide a Hot Pot lunch (or a vegetarian option) and information about local services and events.
The Hot Pot lunches are one of the main ways in which we find out what people are concerned about and what solutions they might have to address some of the issues this community faces.
The Befriending Service
Social isolation is a problem for many older people in East Manchester. In response to this we set up the befriending service. There has been a lot of enthusiasm, both from our new volunteers and from potential and actual service users.
Befriending is a one-to-one relationship between a volunteer and some-one who would like a little support. This could be because they are lonely or isolated; have recently suffered a bereavement; have problems getting out of the house; or simply would like to meet new people.
The befriender and befriendee (service user) meet regularly for an agreed period of time. This time could be spent chatting, or going for a walk to the shops or the park. It could be spent at the befriendee’s home, just talking or watching a video together for example.
The service is open to people aged 55 plus, who live in East Manchester, and feel they would benefit from spending time with a volunteer befriender.
We’re always happy to hear from people who are interested in volunteering. If you are interested in finding out more about our befriending service, either as a service user or a volunteer, please contact Maya Sharma at the Generation Project on 0161 230 6789.
The Take Up Champions
The Take Up Champions programme invites local people to take part in a 12 week programme which presents information on benefits, support, services and resources for older people.
It is a twelve-session programme, which enables local people to support each other and provides people with relevant information to help older people in their community. The aim is to increases the take up of benefits and services by older people and generally improve their quality of life.
By the end of the programme we hope that the participants feel more confident when approaching organisations who can provide support and financial assistance for the older people in their communities.
The programme is open to anyone aged 18 and over, who has an interest in improving the quality of life for people 55 an over in their communities.
